www.chezdidier.net Is Launched!

The Chez Didier website was launched with the purpose of sharing what is best in all types of food and drink, as well as how to prepare such delicacies for those so inclined.  We hope to feed your mind with ideas, awareness, and passion for the cuisines of the world to satisfy the gourmands in all of us.

Much like the popular series America's Test Kitchen, the insightful content of Chez Didier is a collection of recipes, recommendations, tips and techniques proven and refined by our contributors.  While we hope to provide you with useful and fun information, we invite you to contribute as well.  We welcome your comments and feedback to any of our postings, any questions or requests you may submit to us, and certainly if you wish to contribute your own proven recipes, tips, and recommendations.

There are simply too many fun and good things to enjoy when it comes to food and drink, and Chez Didier is here to help you enjoy them that much more.

If there is one purpose the Internet succeeds with above all others, is sharing of information.  Beyond your immediate circle of friends, and beyond theirs, the online world connects and enriches everyone of us. There are simply too many fun and good things to enjoy when it comes to food and drink, and Chez Didier is here to help you enjoy them that much more.

The Pot Luck Premise

Chez Didier began in August 2009 in the form of a pot luck at the office.  Given layoffs, requirements to do more with less, etc. times have certainly been difficult and tough on morale the past couple years for most people.  At our office, it became apparent that the only time people would enjoy sharing fun food with a pot luck any more was the once a year event during the holidays.  An unfortunate bi-product was that this event easily became political and complex, requiring the orchestration of a very large group of people who then felt compelled to join in.

For a brief moment, everyone gets to enjoy a home-cooked meal, learn something new, and visit with their colleagues, all without going out and without rushing through it all.

While such luncheons are generally useful and can be positive, a few people in our department who shared an enjoyment of preparing food, decided to kick-start an office pot luck in a manner that would solve some of the issues mentioned.  The idea was the following:

  1. Keep it simple, much like supper clubs, whereby 3-4 people make all the food preparation for the overall group (our group is a department of about 20 people)
  2. Preparations are to include a main dish, a side or two, and a dessert
  3. Hold the pot luck on a monthly schedule (ours is held on the first Wednesday of the month)
  4. About a week before the event, schedule the conference room and send out an invite declaring the menu selection.

With the pot luck occurring so frequently, there is less pressure for everyone to make it everytime.  With the timely invite, the cooks have a good feel for how much to prepare.  For a brief moment, everyone gets to enjoy a home-cooked meal, learn something new, and visit with their colleagues, all without going out and without rushing through it all.

La Ligue des Gourmands

There was European club in the early 20th century with a very clever idea: menus served simultaneously to its thousands of members at restaurants throughout Europe.  There is a brief desciption on wikipedia here.

A silly but inviting idea is to do the same with the Chez Didier pot lucks.  If you would like to join, sharing the same menus with your group, let us know.  You can reach us at the Contact page.  Also, in the Events section we will post all Chez Didier pot luck details.

What Next?

In the upcoming weeks, we will post the menus and the recipes for the monthly pot lucks.  In between the pot lucks, we will post any and all other content, as there is simply too much good to share.  A lot of planning and thought has gone into this website's design such that information will always be easy to find.

We look forward to serving up a full course resource for your enjoyment.  At Chez Didier, some of us may not be full-time chefs, but we are all full-time gourmands!
